Our Friends and Visitors

Having benefited greatly from many unselfish organizations which shared with our staff from the early days, Alexandra Hospital soon received requests to share with others our story of transformation.

Since 2001, Alexandra Hospital has played host and shared with more than 10,000 distinguished friends and visitors, locally and from all over the world.

For the year 2006, Alexandra Hospital was priviledged to play host to 3842 distinguished visitors locally and all over the world.

Locally, visitors included the Assumption English School, South View Primary School, Hospice Care Association, Victoria School and National Institute of Education.

Overseas visitors hailed from Aceh, Batam, Riau Island and State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM).

Beyond Singapore : Banda Aceh
For the past two years, Alexandra Hospital and Batam Hospital have collaborated in various projects, and especially so in the Tsunami relief efforts in Banda Aceh.

Alexandra Hospital is proud to be the first hospital in Singapore to despatch a medical relief team to Banda Aceh, a province badly destroyed by the 26 December 2004 Tsunami.

After the tragedy, Mr Ng Kian Swan, Deputy Director, Operations, has been appointed as Advisor to Dr T. Marwan Nusri, Head of Provincial Health Office, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam.

As Advisor, Mr Ng will provide professional advice to the Head of Provincial Health Office in terms of staff training and the development of strategy and work plans. He will also work collaboratively with the district health offices and other United Nation agencies working on health-related projects.

Specifically, Mr Ng has been asked by Dr Marwan, Head of Healthcare Services, Aceh to be involved in the following areas:

  • Mapping, planning and the implementation of the total development plan for Banda Aceh
  • Planning and executing the Shared Program planning which includes province-wide referral system (continuity of care), the redevelopment of training centre for health workforce, the redevelopment of provincial-wide information system (including the surveillance and post disaster),

For their work in the Tsunami Relief Operations, Mr Ng Kian Swan, Deputy Director, Operations and Dr Yim Chik Foo, former Consultant, Department of Anaesthesia, were commended with the Public Service Medal (PBM) at the National Day Awards 2005.

On the award, Mr Ng said: “This medal should be shared by everyone in Alexandra Hospital because it was a team effort. What truly touched us was the fact that the patients in Aceh actually recovered and benefitted from the treatments we gave”.

Echoing his sentiments, Dr Yim added: “ There is no way we would have gotten (the award) without the contributions of each and every one in AH. The award is a reflection of our will, aspirations and capability.”

Our community

前人种树, 后人乘凉
(Translated to "One generation plants the tree, the next generation enjoys the shade")

A Famous Chinese Idiom

Since the year 2001, Alexandra Hospital has regularly organized planting sessions with partners to help the community better their environment. From Alexandra Village to Telok Blangah Rise Primary School , staff have spent many weekends by themselves or their families tolling at these areas, literally leaving a legacy.

In September 2005, Alexandra Hospital worked with Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital to beautify their vast piece of garden. More than 100 staff from Alexandra Hospital , 60 staff and patients from Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital and volunteers from Zhangde Primary School participated in this meaningful outreach. The patients of Kwong Wai Shiu hospital can now look forward to leisurely strolls in the gardens of their confines.

Blessed with a vast piece of land, Alexandra Hospital believes in sharing this land with organizations or members of the public. Almost immediately in the first few months of restructuring, the football field was opened for use for members of the public after being out of bounds for many years.

Over the years, the garden also morphed into a hotspot for students all over Singapore to do their Community Involvement Projects (CIP). Many plots of land have since been adopted by schools like Methodist Girls School, St Nicholas Girls School, Raffles Girls School and Zhangde Primary School. Recently, our land have also become a hotspot for outdoor activities seen in the usage of the place for activities like the Tree Top Climbing organized by Spring Singapore.
