| Public Hospital Preparations For SARS Outbreak: Experience Of Alexandra Hospital. |
|
Francis Chun Yue Lee, Wei Keong Wee , Azman Johan. Prehospital & Disaster Medicine 2005 ; 20 (1):24-31
Alexandra Hospital was one of the public hospitals in Singapore that responded to the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) crisis. Being the only public hospital that remained "SARS-free", i.e., with no documented intra-institutional spread of disease, AH had to tackle a sudden, two-fold surge in hospital attendances and patient volume. As the oldest hospital with a traditional open ward design and lack of proper isolation facilities, tough command and control policies had to be implemented to reduce the risk of a SARS outbreak. Stringent infection control measures, screening and triage, clinical procedures, and administrative policies all were important factors in helping the hospital balance the need to run routine operations while "fighting" SARS. Staff and people management also were crucial in keeping the workforce healthy and maintaining their morale and confidence during this difficult period. |

| Thoracic Aneurysm Rupture Presenting as a Rapidly Enlarging Neck Mass. |
|
Mark Tan, Francis Lee, Michael Clarke. European Journal of Emergency Medicine. 2006 Jun ;13 (3):182-3
A rapidly enlarging neck mass is an unusual clinical complaint at the emergency department. We report a case of an acute neck mass caused by a haematoma from a ruptured thoracic aneurysm. This resulted in dynamic airway distortion and obstruction and posed a great challenge to airway management. |

| Avoiding Prolonged Waiting Time During Busy Periods In The Emergency Department: Is There A Role For The Senior Emergency Physician In Triage? |
|
James Travers, Francis Lee, European Journal of Emergency Medicine. 2006 Dec ;13 (6):342-348
Patient satisfaction at Emergency Departments can be improved by reductions in waiting time. Traditional methods require registration and triage before seeing the doctor with senior emergency physicians mainly engaged in treating serious cases. We examine a radical change in workflow pattern on waiting time by placing a senior emergency physician with the triage nurse and examining the impact of treating simple cases upfront with discharge on the waiting times for stretcher cases. |
