Healthcare is not illness care

“All over the world, medical inflation exceeds the general GDP. If there is no transformation in the way healthcare is delivered, healthcare must eventually bankrupt all economies. We need to find creative ways to deliver more with less, maintain or raise standard, while cutting out wastages and squeezing out inefficiency. ”

Mr Khaw Boon Wan
Minister For Health, 2003

70% of all health problems are lifestyle related to diet, lack of exercise and stress. As such we hope to help patients uncover their medical problems before they get sick. Alexandra Hospital (AH) believes that pre-illness management including prevention and early detection is equally important. Hence, our Vision is “Adding years of healthy life to the people of Singapore”.

With this in mind, Alexandra Hospital embarked on various projects with community partners like the Community Development Councils, to build up health awareness in the community. Since restructuring, Alexandra Hospital has performed health screening for more than 50, 000 members of the public. In 2004, Alexandra Hospital started a fast referral clinic to enable members of the public to seek professional help if an abnormality is detected during a health screening.

With carefully selected topics in common illness, we organized health talks and forums to empower our patients with information to manage their health. Since the year 2000, more than 10, 000 members of the public have benefited from the public forums conducted by our doctors and allied health professionals.

This approach is supplemented by a wealth of resource materials. more on Health Library.

In the year 2000, as part of the restructuring process, Alexandra Hospital invited some patients as well as members of the public to share with us the 5 most important things that matter to them. They shared that:

Respect patient’s dignity (R)

Provide information at all times (I)

Facilitate access to integrated care and services (C)
Give me cost effective care (E)
Deliver Consistent quality care at all times (Q)

Our approach for patient-care is adapted from the Mayo Clinic, United States of America. Our primary focus is on Excellence in Patient Care, made possible by 2 important pillars: Learning & Research, Teaching & Sharing. More on Our Philosophy of Care

Using technology as an enabler, we embarked on a project termed Healthcare.NET with software giant Microsoft and the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore to improve work processes within the hospital, especially on patient’s waiting time.

A 3 - year pilot programme will deliver critical information to health-care workers at the hospital which will enable faster diagnoses and more effective treatment using a “digital dashboard”. Successful projects applications from the 3 - year pilot will be implemented once Alexandra Hospital moves to Yishun in 2009 as Singapore ’s only acute care hospital in the north More on Our Dream: A Hassle Free Hospital.

At Alexandra Hospital , we strive to achieve a balance between patient’s needs and the provision of quality and affordable healthcare service.

After a major restructuring in October 2000, we have upgraded both our facilities and services to serve our patients better. However, our hospital’s bill remains the lowest among the other hospitals in Singapore . Average Bill Size.

In our continuing quest to provide better, faster, cheaper and safer for patients, Alexandra Hospital is now proud to announce that we have achieved the Joint International Commission (JCI) accreditation. This is an achievement that recognizes our commitment to provide continuous quality patient care.
