Healthcare.NET : A “Hassle-Free” Hospital

“Traditionally, we have designed hospitals to push efficiency for doctors and nurses, which I think should continue. But along the way, we may have neglected patients.”

Mr Khaw Boon Wan
Minister for Health, 2004

Long patient waiting times will soon become a thing of the past at Alexandra Hospital. With the signing of the Memorandum of Intent (MOI) with software giant Microsoft and the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) in November 2004, Alexandra Hospital plans to revolutionise healthcare in Singapore and make a patient’s visit to a hospital less time-consuming.

Under the MOI, Alexandra Hospital will work with partners to streamline its processes and enhance patient services with the help of technology. This initiative will be implemented first at Alexandra Hospital’s Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM), followed by its Specialist Outpatient Clinics (SOC) and Inpatient Wards.

Over the next three years, the project also known as Healthcare.NET, will pilot and test the use of information communication technologies to bring about a patient-centric, seamless, safe and cost effective healthcare system.

After years of making doctors and nurses more efficient, Health Minister, Mr Khaw Boon Wan says the time has come for the focus to be shifted back to patients. He hopes that with technology as an enabler, it will help transform the new Alexandra Hospital at Yishun (AH@Yishun)into a hassle-free hospital from the patient’s point-of-view.
